Ishmael ben Elisha
( s. II AD).

Sabio judío. Nacido en el seno de una acaudalada familia sacerdotal, fue llevado en cautiverio por las legiones romanas que saquearon Jerusalén en 70 AD, pero su antiguo maestro pagó el rescate y fue enviado de regreso a Palestina, donde se dedicó al estudio. Fundó una escuela rabínica y escribió comentarios sobre la Torá, aplicando 13 reglas de exégesis basadas en las siete reglas de Hillel. Conocido por su enfoque simple y literal del saber bíblico, procuró aligerar la carga de los judíos observantes en cuanto a la interpretación de la Ley. A menudo se hace mención a su disputa con Akiba ben Yosef por lo que consideraba las excesivas interpretaciones de este último acerca de palabras o frases bíblicas superficiales.
